Is Stainless Steel Magnetic? Learn the Truth Behind Stainless Steel Magnetism

Time: 2026-10-08Hits: 12

A common myth says stainless steel is non-magnetic. If you test stainless steel products with a magnet, sometimes the magnet sticks firmly, and sometimes it barely attracts at all. This does **not** mean the material is fake stainless steel. Magnetism of stainless steel is determined by its internal crystal structure and alloy composition.

### 1. Austenitic Stainless Steel (Non-magnetic / Weakly Magnetic)

The most widely used grades are 304 and 316 stainless steel, belonging to austenitic stainless steel.

- Crystal structure: Austenite

- Magnetic feature: Naturally non-magnetic in fully annealed state.

- Note: After cold working like bending, stamping, drawing, part of austenite transforms into martensite. The workpiece will show slight magnetism. This is normal and does not reduce corrosion resistance.

### 2. Ferritic Stainless Steel (Magnetic)

Typical grade: 430 stainless steel.

- Crystal structure: Ferrite

- Magnetic feature: Strongly magnetic.

- Features: Good oxidation resistance, lower nickel content, commonly used for kitchen utensils, appliance shells.

### 3. Martensitic Stainless Steel (Magnetic)

Typical grades: 410, 420.

- Crystal structure: Martensite

- Magnetic feature: Strongly magnetic.

- Features: High hardness and wear resistance, suitable for knives, scissors, surgical cutlery.

### 4. Duplex Stainless Steel

Duplex stainless steel has mixed austenite and ferrite phases. It shows moderate magnetism, with excellent strength and corrosion resistance, widely used in chemical and marine projects.

✅ Magnet test **cannot judge if stainless steel is genuine**.

- 304/316 may have weak magnetism after processing.

- 430,410,420 stainless steel are magnetic by nature.

Magnetism is only a property related to crystal structure. The real standard to verify stainless steel quality is alloy composition test (spectrometer test), not a simple magnet.

When selecting stainless steel materials:

- If you need non-magnetic material: Choose annealed 304 or 316 stainless steel. Be aware cold forming may bring slight magnetism.

- If magnetism is acceptable and cost is prioritized: Ferritic or martensitic stainless steel can be selected.

Next time when you use a magnet to test stainless steel, do not jump to the conclusion of counterfeit products. Check the steel grade and alloy composition to know its real performance.
